From Client to Colleague: Gary’s Incredible Year at Steps Together

In this blog we’re talking about Gary, who just celebrated his one-year anniversary as a valued member of the Steps Together team and completed his SMART Recovery certification. How awesome is that?!

Now, let’s rewind a bit. Gary’s journey with Steps Together actually began back on December 27th, 2022, when he came to us seeking help with his addiction. He undertook a 28-day detox, which, as it sometimes happens, had to be extended due to a hospital stay. But Gary didn’t let that derail him. He stayed focused on his recovery, and the results speak for themselves.

What Gary had to say about his incredible year:

“After dedicating a year to personal recovery while exploring Europe, I’ve remained deeply committed to supporting others on similar paths. My ongoing involvement with AA, CA, and Smart Recovery has led to service work in prisons and institutions, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

In January 2023, I began a fulfilling five-month volunteer position at George House, further enhancing my understanding of recovery support. This was followed by a peer mentoring course with NRN, and a brief stint at Elizabeth House Secondary care.

Returning to Bank House, I’ve continued my service work, achieving a certification in the SMART Recovery program. Having received training, I now facilitate SMART sessions for Bank House clients and am eager to extend this service to other units. I’m committed to my ongoing journey with Steps, eager to see how my passion for supporting recovery continues to unfold.”

Seriously, what a year! Let’s just unpack that for a moment.

He not only dedicated time to his own well-being, exploring Europe while prioritising his recovery, but he also become incredibly active in the recovery community, consistently giving back through service at prisons and other institutions. Gary didn’t just stop there. He started volunteering at George House back in January 2023 for five months and completed a peer mentoring course with NRN. He also spent some time at Elizabeth House before returning to Bank House, where he continues to be an invaluable part of the team.

Gary has now become a certified SMART Recovery facilitator. He’s now delivering SMART sessions to clients at Bank House and is eager to expand his reach! It’s so fantastic to see someone who has benefited from recovery so committed to paying it forward and helping others.

Gary’s story is a real testament to the fact that recovery is not just about stopping an addiction, it’s about finding purpose, giving back, and building a fulfilling life. We’re incredibly proud of Gary and can’t wait to see what he achieves next with Steps Together. We’re so happy he’s chosen to share his journey with us.

Keep shining, Gary!
