Alcohol Awareness Week: Shining a Light on Nacoa UK, Supporting Children of Alcoholics

This Alcohol Awareness Week, we want to shine a spotlight on an incredible organisation doing vital work Nacoa.

Nacoa stands for the National Association for Children of Alcoholics and provides support and understanding to the children of alcoholic parents. Their mission is to help the children of alcoholics navigate the challenges of living with an alcoholic parent, offering vital resources, information, and a safe space to share their experiences.

We’ve recently partnered with Nacoa and are incredibly proud to be donating to their cause through our Staff Awards Night: The Shine Awards – The UK’s first alcohol-free corporate ceremony. This partnership speaks volumes about our commitment and supporting important charities like Nacoa is a top priority.

Why is Nacoa’s work so crucial?

The impact of alcoholism on children can be profound and long-lasting. Children of alcoholics often experience:

  • Emotional distress: Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and feelings of isolation
  • Behavioral issues: Anger, aggression, difficulty concentrating, and substance abuse
  • Academic struggles: Falling behind in school, missing assignments, and facing disciplinary action
  • Family instability: Witnessing domestic violence, experiencing financial hardship, and facing parental neglect

Nacoa’s support services provide children of alcoholics with:

  • Confidential support lines: A safe space to talk about their experiences and access immediate help
  • Online resources: Information, advice, and practical tips for coping with the challenges of living with an alcoholic parent
  • Support groups: A chance to connect with others who understand their experiences and build a supportive network
  • Educational programs: Workshops and seminars designed to equip children with the tools they need to navigate their situation and build resilience

Hilary Henriques MBE: Nacoa Founder and CEO

“We are so proud to be the chosen charity for the Shine Awards by Steps Together. With its innovative alcohol-free take, this is what being the change looks like. All the while raising funds and awareness for Nacoa and some of the most vulnerable children we have in our society.

Steps Together are creating a virtuous cycle which breaks down stigma and will lead to individuals affected feeling seen and know that they aren’t alone and that there are ways to protect themselves and feel better. We are starting on a journey that will change the lives of people in need and celebrate the unsung heroes in our community who support them.”
